In the first operation, Customs officials said two passengers who arrived in Delhi from Bangkok on September 9 were placed under surveillance based on APIS profiling. During monitoring of their check-in baggage, officials found that two other passengers who had arrived in Delhi from Kathmandu were attempting to collect their luggage.
Customs officers intercepted the two Kathmandu passengers while they were exiting through the Green Channel. During questioning, they stated that they had been asked to collect the baggage belonging to the passengers who had arrived from Bangkok.
The two Bangkok passengers were subsequently stopped by Customs officials. An X-ray examination of their baggage showed suspicious images, following which the luggage was searched. A green-coloured substance was recovered and appeared prima facie to be hydroponic cannabis. The total weight of the substance, including packaging, was 27.450 kg.
All four passengers, along with the recovered substance and baggage, were handed over to Preventive Shift-B for further action.
In a separate operation on September 7, Customs officers, acting on profiling, intercepted an Indian passenger who had arrived in Delhi from Phuket via Bangkok at the Green Channel of Terminal 3.
A search of the passenger's travel bag led to the recovery of six pouches containing cannabis/marijuana. The net weight of the substance was 2.8575 kg, with an estimated value of Rs 99.99 lakh.
The passenger was arrested under Section 43(b) of the NDPS Act, while the substance was seized under Section 43(a). Action in the case was initiated under Sections 8, 20, 23 and 29 of the NDPS Act.
The two separate airport operations resulted in the seizure of more than 30 kg of suspected hydroponic cannabis and the detention of six passengers for further legal action.
